about

"Spectral Park is the alias of Southampton’s Luke Donovan, who here dishes out a debut LP of energetic sampledelic psych-pop which, says the press release, was 'literally sourced from a box of records the Southampton multi-instrumentalist found on a walk by a council block’s curbside garbage'. That old art-from-trash chestnut. . . . What’s immediately striking here, though, is how well it’s been done. Tumbling rhythms and wibbly Hammond organ burst forth from your speakers with confident, urgent vocals driving everything upwards, it’s euphoric garage pop under cover of experimental bedroom lo-fi weirdness. There’s no disguising a good hook, though, and that’s where Donovan delivers in spades. . . . The speed with which the catchy tunes whiz by reminds me of things like Dan Deacon, mid-period Of Montreal or a less annoying more analogue Animal Collective, but the alien nostalgia that the constant samples lend it combined with the breakneck relentless of the alternate-universe pop hits this record churns out mean that he’s already carved himself out a little niche that’s very much his own. A really superb debut." -Norman Records
